Disney has shared more about the Walt Disney Imagineering story behind San Fransokyo Square and some of the exciting activities that are in store.
Transporting you to the not-too-distant future, San Fransokyo Square is a fictional blend of two renowned cities, San Francisco and Tokyo. As the local fishing trade faced difficulties and the tech industry emerged, a group of entrepreneurs collaborated to transform the seaside canneries into a thriving, diverse neighborhood of restaurants and small businesses, offering a range of dining and shopping experiences.
San Fransokyo Square will feature a noteworthy local symbol: the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge, which will extend across the tide pools connecting San Fransokyo Square to the Paradise Gardens Park obelisk. Upon crossing the bridge, you will be able to see the floating wind turbine located on top of a former fishing net tannery, supplying power to the neighborhood from high above. The details spread throughout San Fransokyo Square offer hints to the area’s rich and delightful history.
At the southern edge of San Fransokyo, near a renovated warehouse, you might come across Baymax. Pacific Wharf, which presently houses restaurants serving sourdough bread, ice cream sundaes, Mexican cuisine, Asian dishes, and other delectable items, will continue to operate all of its popular dining destinations throughout the area’s transition.
Upon completion of the transition to San Fransokyo Square later this summer, visitors will be able to savor familiar delights like soups served in freshly baked bread bowls, in addition to a variety of new Asian-inspired options. The new Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería is influenced by the area’s three diverse cultures, featuring signage in English, Japanese, and Spanish. Outside, guests can enjoy a charming beer garden decorated with festive lights and papel picado.
Disney Imagineers are working diligently to complete this transformation. We hope you are as excited as we are about San Fransokyo Square coming to life at Disney California Adventure park this summer!
