The Story Behind the Tavern

Established by the legendary pirate rumrunner, Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn, and her talkative first mate, Rummy, The Beak and Barrel is more than just a place to grab a bite. It’s a living, breathing story that guests can step into. The tavern itself was once a mess hall for Spanish soldiers before it was claimed and repurposed by a cunning crew of pirates. It’s a place where magic stirs, and every corner holds a secret waiting to be uncovered.

As you step inside, you are transported to a world of high-seas adventure. Between bites and sips, you may find yourself swept into a sing-along, stomping to stirring shanties, or trading tall tales with pirates from every corner of the world. With immersive areas to uncover—from The Mess and The Mapmaker’s Room to the Captain’s Quarters and beyond—no visit is ever the same.

A “Sneak Beak” into the Spaces

Let’s drop anchor and explore some of the fantastical details you’ll find in this new tavern.

The Mess

The first space you’ll encounter is The Mess, the largest and most central area of the tavern. Look up as you enter to see a ship’s bell, rumored to be from Captain Merry’s first ship. The room features long tables, perfect for pirates to gather ’round and share their own tales. An imposing anchor, covered in candles and dripping with wax, hangs high above, serving as a unique chandelier. Be sure to look for the intricate Mermaid Windows to your side, salvaged from the wreckage of an infamous pirate ship and caked with barnacles.

At the far end of the room, you’ll find the dark corner known as The Brig. It still bears the bars and framework of its past life, though the door was pried off its hinges long ago. If you find yourself seated here, you might hear the walls whisper tales of the rascals they once held.

Cursed Bar

The eye-catcher of the space is the massive, skull-shaped bar, which has heard many a shanty sung in its shadow. Brimming with a rare collection of bottles and spoils, the bar is anchored to the side of The Mess. At its heart sits the Enchanted Rum Bottle, a gift from the enchantress Tia Dalma. It is said that as long as the bottle stays full, the tavern’s barrels and the pirates’ cheer will never run dry.

Perched atop the bar, you’ll meet Rummy, Merry’s trusted companion and quartermaster. Eagle-eyed Disney fans may notice that he bears a striking resemblance to the original Barker Bird that once sat at the entrance to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Rummy welcomes patrons, keeps an eye on the crew, and is quick with a story, joke, or rousing toast from his main roost in the hollow of the skull’s eye.

Captains’ Quarters

As you step into the Captains’ Quarters, you’ll get a taste of the finer life, which was once the private residence of the Spanish Comandante. Though its walls were once lined with grand artwork and rich drapery, time—and the rambunctious hands of pirates—have left their mark with slashing blades and burn marks.

In the center of the room, an elegant fireplace provides a warm glow. On the mantel, five miniature ships sit in glass bottles, rumored to represent pirates from every corner of the world. Keep a weathered eye out, as these mysterious vessels are known to come alive and engage in a fearsome bottle-bound battle for anyone who dares to watch.

The Mapmaker’s Room

The Mapmaker’s Room is filled to the brim with rolled-up maps, parchment, spilled ink, and treasured secrets that belonged to a (some may say) crazed pirate cartographer. Today, pirates gather around the sprawling worktable in the center of the room. On the adjacent wall is a large painted map of the known pirating world, with many pirating secrets to be discovered. Will you be the one to bring them to light?

Seaworthy Sips and Snacks

In a place built for swashbucklers, the food and beverage offerings are fit for a crew. With nods to the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and the beloved films, The Beak and Barrel immerses guests into the story with fun, flavorful creations.

For grub, you can snack on Island Provisions, a shareable dish with plantain chips, blue corn tortillas, and toasted flatbread served with a variety of savory dips. Or, for the more adventurous, there’s Kraken’s Katch, a cold salad with octopus tentacles marinated in lemon and lime juice, paired with olives, bell peppers, avocado, and Piquillo pepper-almond foam.

The beverage creations are just as imaginative. Families can enjoy The Cursed Treasure, a non-alcoholic concoction featuring a delicious combination of coconut milk and cookie crumbs, topped with vanilla foam and a pirate’s gold cookie. For the adults, there’s the Plunderer’s Punch, featuring Kraken Black Spiced Rum, blackberry, vanilla, and a hint of citrus. This specialty drink arrives in a keepsake pirate skull mug, so you can take a treasure of your own home. (Limit one per guest.)

The full beverage menu features a wide range of cocktails, wines, spirits, and an exclusive selection of draft beers.
